ANIMALS:
Jaguar - Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington
Born in Cambridge, Mass., daughter of a professor of paleontology
at Harvard, Anna Hyatt was surrounded by animal life from childhood,
and her formidable reputation in the early years of the 20th century
rested on her animal pieces. A fascination with wild animals in
the late 19th century made this an acceptable and popular subject
for sculptors at the time. Hyatt Huntington became fascinated
with the large cats at the New York Zoo, particularly a prize
jaguar named Senor Lopez. In the version here, crouching still
but alert, he seems ready to pounce on the goldfish in the pond
when he finds an opportune moment. An equestrian sculpture of
Jaon of Arc on Riverside Drive is a beloved monument. Her work
may also be seen at the Hispanic Society, NY, and Brookgreen Gardens,
South Carolina, both founded with her husband, railroad heir Archer
Huntington.
