Art Classes for Adults

Designed for adults with all levels of art making experience, programs offer hands on studio art classes led by experienced artists. Projects provide opportunities for personal expression in drawing, painting, printmaking, fiber arts and more. A focus on group and individual projects help adults discover and learn art skills and processes.

MONDAYS

Landscape Painting in Watercolor

Mondays, 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Beginner level

Celebrate nature in this three day landscape painting workshop with artist Jim Minet. Working in the studio, observe demonstrations of varying painting techniques, application, and color mixing, while developing an understanding of how to design, arrange and compose the subject matter on the page. Using provided images and the surrounding landscape, participants will apply these skills and techniques to original works of art.

Landscape Painting in Oil
(water-soluble oil paint)

All levels welcome

Oil painting with easy clean-up! Water-soluble oil paints act as oils with a slower drying time, but maintain the ability to clean painting materials with water. Join artist Jim Minet in this two day class and explore the medium as each participant creates a landscape painting on canvas. Some painting experience recommended. Canvas and painting materials are provided.

Pastel Painting

Portrait Drawing

Wednesdays, 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Beginner to intermediate levels

Learn to masterfully render the complex anatomy of the human face through observational drawing and the guidance of an instructor. Proportion, volume and value are emphasized while studying photos, casts and working from a live model. A beginner drawing class is recommended as a prerequisite.

Abstract Painting: Acrylic

All levels welcome

Learn to paint expressively in acrylic or water-based oil paints to create surfaces filled with texture, color, energy and movement. Become inspired by Modern Art masters and pioneers like Pollack, Kandinsky, Rothko and more and experience the processes in which they worked. Participants learn color mixing, theory, application, composition, and how to tap into one’s creative potential.

Find your artistic groove each Wednesday in a relaxing and creative environment. Using photos, still life and art made by master painters as inspiration, practice a variety of skills and techniques involving application, color mixing and observation. Work independently under the guidance of an instructor and participate in lively critiques and discussions with fellow artists.

EDUCATION

Art Classes for Kids and Teens

Programs for young artists offer traditional art making classes which combine studio art skills with process based exploration. With projects focused on the connection between art, design, nature and science, opportunities for self-expression, creative thinking and problem-solving are encouraged by art educators in a supportive environment.

TUESDAYS

Art Compass: For Teens and Young Adults with Autism

Tuesdays, 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm

Teens receive hands-on training in basic artistic processes that can be translated into practical job skills. Based on current exhibitions in the galleries at the Museum, these workshops will encourage participants to explore different methods of art making and design and how a museum can be a resource for creative inspiration. Students with autism will have the opportunity to apply their artistic skills and functional academic learning in a real world setting, while preparing to transition to after school life. Partial funding for our program for autism comes from the North Shore Autism Circle.

Spark imagination, creativity and art based learning with traditional art making and contemporary concepts. Classes will combine studio art skills with process based explorations while discovering a variety of art materials, applications, surfaces, and learning about artists on view in our Museum. Young artists will create a series of projects in both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional forms. Families and friends may celebrate with us on the final day of class with an art show beginning at 5:30pm.

College Portfolio Prep

High School students develop college art portfolios with group and individual instruction. Focus on the elements and principles of art and design through application to individual students’ work, along with conversations about the work on view in our galleries. Participants work from live models* and still life arrangements in a variety of traditional art materials, participate in critique sessions and portfolio reviews under the guidance and support of a skilled artist, college educator, and college admissions associate. *includes model nudity.

Story Tots

Children and their adult companions investigate color, shape, form and texture with art activities based on a new story each week. Listen to story books read aloud and nurture creative expression while exploring various art materials and processes. Begin with Story Time followed by an art project.

This innovative program gives families a chance to witness their child experience success in a welcoming and creative learning environment. Parents and caregivers will gain skills in behavioral methods which they can employ when bringing their child into a community setting. Families will engage in fun interactive gallery experiences that provide opportunities for everyone to look at and talk about art in a group setting followed by hands on art making activities that encourage experimentation with new materials, processes and creative play. Partial funding for our program for autism comes from the North Shore Autism Circle.
