We are dedicated to introducing learners of every age to artworks through investigative conversations and artmaking experiences. Visual art is a way to communicate and share ideas across different mediums, languages and cultures. As educators, we create opportunities for visitors with different needs, experiences, and interests to make meaningful connections with art. We challenge ourselves and our audiences to think creatively, embrace new ideas, and consider other insights as we talk about art in group discussions.

Laura Lynch

Director of Education

Laura Lynch, MS Art Education, Museum Studies, has worked in the fields of Art and Museum education for over 25 years. Lynch initiates and manages museum-school partnerships with schools across Long Island with the goal of providing opportunities for students to actively make meaning when looking at works of art. Lynch has been working with diverse audiences throughout her career including English Language Learners, children and adults with special needs, and other non - traditional museum goers. Lynch trains docents and educators in best museum practice to use in museum galleries and classrooms. She conducts professional development sessions that help teachers in any field find ways to integrate visual literacy and art in their classrooms.

Katie Aragon

School and Family Program Educator

 Katie earned her Masters degree in Museum Education from Bank Street College and her BFA from Adelphi University. After several years teaching in a variety of museums and classrooms in New York City, Katie joined the Nassau County Museum of Art as the School and Family Program Educator. Her interest in process-based art and interdisciplinary teaching methods is an important element of her teaching and program development at the Museum. Her own work as an artist focuses on the natural environment.

Noemi Fletcher

Education and Public Programs Coordinator

Noemi Fletcher, BFA Arts Management, has been with the Museum since 2010. In her role she facilitates the scheduling and implementation of the Museum’s public events, including tours, films, lectures, concerts, workshops, and school programs. In addition, she is instrumental in the coordination of a weekly training workshop for the Museum’s docent corps and is the education liaison between Development, Visitor Services and Curatorial departments.

Rebecca Hirschwerk

Manager of School Programs

Rebecca Hirschwerk, M.Ed. is the Manager of School programs for the Nassau County Museum of Art and has been at the museum since 2007. In her role she develops and implements programs for school age visitors as well as professional development workshops for teachers and administrators. Outside of the museum she runs a visual arts program for medical professionals and works at a synagogue school exploring Judaism through the lens of art.

Samantha Hofsiss

Educator

Samantha Hofsiss received a Bachelor of Fine Art with a minor in Art History from Alfred University, and her Master of Fine Art degree from LIU Post. Samantha’s studio practice includes work in sculpture and performance art, and she has exhibited work both nationally and internationally; including the Northern California Women's Caucus for the Arts, and South Korea’s Chung Ang University and Jung Gallery. Samantha is also a Museum Educator leading school tours and programs at Heckscher Museum of Art and Nassau County Museum of Art. She has also taught studio art classes at Huntington Fine Art and LIU Post, as well as adult and children’s art classes at The Manes Education Center.

Collaboration

Programs at the Museum create opportunities for students to collectively build understanding about works of art. Working together in a group setting fosters compassion and promotes positive social behavior.

Through conversations in our galleries, students learn that everyone has a voice and insight to share regardless of past experiences in a museum. Students learn to consider and understand others points developing tolerance and empathy for others.

Museums are alternative and inclusive learning environments.

Programs at NCMA employ a range of both group and individual active learning experiences that address different learning modalities. We are an inclusive learning environments that engage students of all ages and abilities including ELL students and children and teens with special needs.

Drop into The Manes Education Center for hands-on activities inspired by our current exhibitions. Spend up to an hour exploring a range of materials, techniques, and themes before continuing out onto our lush grounds filled with trails, a sculpture park and gardens. 

Family Sundays

Through art investigations inspired by works in our current exhibition, families explore a variety of materials and art concepts. A focus on process and exploration fosters confidence in artmaking, as well as emphasizing creative problem-solving. This drop-in program encourages families to stop by the museum for collaborative artmaking and conversation for thirty to forty-five minutes. A different project each week facilitated by our museum educator supports different artmaking strategies, an opportunity to learn new art vocabulary and artists, and expands our idea of what art can be.

Summer Art Lab

For ages 5 through 12, our Summer Art Lab program focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to artmaking, in particular merging science, nature and art. Guided by the interests of the students, Summer Art Lab is a flexible program that provides an introduction to a variety of art materials, processes and artists with the opportunity to dive more deeply into subjects of interest. The Nassau County Museum of Art’s unique characteristics of being a historic house, nature preserve, sculpture garden and art museum reinforces our interdisciplinary approach as we pull from all of these facets for inspiration. Individual and collaborative art explorations, as well as games and community building activities within the small group, are designed in respect to different developmental stages.
